This 20-question test practices the step that comes before solving an equation: turning a verbal situation into a correct algebraic expression. The contexts include pricing, travel, measurement, percentages, ages, formulas, and repeated quantities.
The problems are not twenty versions of the same membership-fee question. Some ask you to write an expression, others ask you to simplify a model or evaluate it for a given value. Distractors are based on realistic translation errors such as reversing subtraction or multiplying a fixed fee by a variable.
The test covers fixed plus variable costs, rate multiplied by time, perimeter and area models, discounts and commissions, consecutive-number expressions, averages, percentage formulas, and phrases that require parentheses.
Typical errors include reversing “less than,” multiplying a fixed charge by the number of units, forgetting that percent must be written as a decimal, using perimeter when the problem asks for area, and omitting parentheses around a complete sum or difference.
